Strength
Psalm 46: 1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
There are certainly times when the mountains quake and the earth beneath our feet seems in peril. We are shaken to our vary core and are left vulnerable and exposed. Cancer, MS, dementia, a heart murmur, a death, loss of income, or a myriad of other ailments or predicaments cut us down in size and hope. Where is meaning? Where is purpose? Where is the good? Where is mercy and compassion?
Nations strive in contention against other nations. Relationships are in upheaval. Politicians come and go with every new election, each with their own agenda. No headway is perceived. Entire generations step forth, claim their ground, then disappear into the backdrop of a bigger story. Who can leave a mark?
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God. There is respite for the soul. Maybe the psalmist envisioned the victory, with power and might, how God made a way through Jesus’ death and resurrection. There on the cross, judgement and mercy kiss.
The battle is in the hearts of individuals, all people throughout time. Yet the victory is already won. In our moment of anguish and despair, can we submit? Can we surrender our individual destinies to that good force that does not fret, that has everything under control. The exhortation to just be still gives peace to weary travelers. It encourages us to a sense of tranquility in knowing that God’s plans and purposes are bigger than us. God is immutable, impassable, and we are kept by him.
Here on earth, we can only ponder ultimate realities. But God knows all. In your moment of doubt, know that he has got you firmly in his hands. God is sovereign. God reigns supreme. And the promise is that he has made a way. He is tender and compassionate. He is love. He blesses and keeps. We are simply spiritual beneficiaries of his grace and kindness.
Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
